Thanksgiving looked a little different for us this year—in a good way. For the last several years, our tradition has been to camp at A.H. Stephens State park. This year, our family packed up and headed to Cloudland Canyon State Park / Campground, where we stayed from Wednesday to Sunday. We camped with three other families, making it a lively and memory-filled long weekend surrounded by nature, good food, and even a little friendly competition. Â
Our Campsite: Cozy but Compact Â
We were on site #12 in the West Rim campground, which was conveniently located near the walkway to a covered picnic area. It made for an easy spot to gather with friends and family, but it’s worth noting that the site was a bit narrow. For us, with only one slide-out on our camper, it worked perfectly, but those with larger campers or wide slide-outs might find it tight. Â

The campground itself was clean and inviting, with trails that cater to all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just want a relaxing stroll, there’s a path for you. I was surprised the leaves were still so pretty at the end of November but no matter where you looked, the beauty of Cloudland Canyon didn’t disappoint. Â
Thanksgiving Day: A Cabin Feast Â
Thursday was all about family and food. My parents and the parents of another family joined us for the day, and we gathered at a cabin rented by my children to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. There was a large table that had 8 chairs which is where all the girls sat, the picture below shows the couch area and where a few of the guys ate. The cozy cabin setting, made the holiday feel extra special. There’s nothing quite like sharing stories, laughter, and delicious dishes in such a peaceful, natural environment. Â

Black Friday Adventures: Chattanooga Charm Â
On Friday, we decided to mix things up with a quick trip to Chattanooga, just a short drive from the campground. We spent the morning exploring downtown, where the MoonPie General Store was a delightful stop. It’s packed with nostalgic goodies and quirky finds that added a touch of whimsy to our day. Â
Next, we headed to Warehouse Row, a stylish shopping and dining spot. After some browsing, we landed at The Social for appetizers and drinks. I tried their seasonal caramel apple sangria, which was every bit as amazing as it sounds. We also shared plates of pimento cheese, fried pickles, and cornbread—all delicious, but the fried pickles were my personal favorite. How cute are Anthropologies Christmas trees.
Game Night: Fireside Fun Â
Friday evening, we gathered at the campsite to watch the Georgia game. Unfortunately, some technical issues had us improvising. Back at the cabin, we built a roaring fire in the fireplace and settled in to watch the game in ultimate comfort. While the game was long, the cozy atmosphere and good company made it a night to remember. For those that were awake anyway! I missed all the overtimes and action by falling asleep at half-time!
Saturday: Trails and Tournaments Â
Saturday was packed with activity. We hit the trails to explore more of Cloudland Canyon’s stunning landscapes. The variety of hikes meant there was something for everyone, from challenging climbs to easy walks with breathtaking views. I was grateful that I had a good pair of boots. They helped support my ankles on the uneven terrain and were so comfortable. I also noticed several people wearing this type. They look like a more traditional hiking book but cute!
In the afternoon, we joined a double-elimination corn hole tournament, which turned into a highlight of the weekend. Although my partner and I were eliminated early, the competition was a blast. Andy and Owen ended up taking home the win, and securing the coveted trophy until next year. We have had this one for years and pass it from camper to camper depending on the winner. It’s also customizable so you can personalize it to fit your group.Â

Wrapping Up: A Thanksgiving to Remember Â
Cloudland Canyon State Park gave us the perfect backdrop for a Thanksgiving filled with adventure, connection, and fun. From the narrow but cozy site #12 on the West Rim to the cabin Thanksgiving feast, our quick trip to Chattanooga, and the corn hole tournament, every moment added something special to the experience. Â
If you’re looking for a unique way to spend Thanksgiving or just a beautiful place to camp, Cloudland Canyon is a fantastic choice. The mix of outdoor activities, nearby attractions, and peaceful surroundings made this a trip we’ll never forget. Â
